20 years of LANGE 1 – the genesis of a watch family



LANGE 1 (1994)

The LANGE 1 perpetuates the tradition of historic A. Lange & Söhne masterpieces. It won instant acclaim when it premiered 20 years ago. This was due to its particular combination of traditional elements that are unique to Saxony's watchmaking heritage, such as the three-quarter plate, the screwed gold chatons, and the screw balance as well as groundbreaking innovations including the outsize date, the asymmetric dial layout and a three-day movement. With this timepiece, Saxon precision watchmaking had re-found its home.


LANGE 1A (1998 – limited to 100 watches)

The LANGE 1A is a special model that ranks among A. Lange & Söhne's most coveted collectors' pieces. The warm hue of the lavishly guilloched dial matches the yellow-gold case. Not only the dial, but also the hands and appliques – and even the escapement – are made of solid gold.



LANGE 1 TOURBILLON (2000 – limited to 250 watches in pink gold and 150 in platinum)

With the LANGE 1 TOURBILLON, A. Lange & Söhne revisited the endearing tradition of honouring a year that completes a century: by presenting an extraordinary watch. With its tourbillon and power-reserve indicator, it paid tribute to the famous "Centennial Tourbillon" showcased at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1900 – and it became A. Lange & Söhne's second millennium event.



LANGE 1 MOON PHASE (2002)

The technical artistry and aesthetic appeal of the LANGE 1 MOON PHASE lie in its continuously driven and thus extremely realistic depiction of the waxing and waning moon. As befits a Lange watch, it takes its task very seriously: in 122.6 years, the display deviates from the true lunar cycle by merely a single day.



GRAND LANGE 1 "Luna Mundi"
(2003 – limited to 101 sets)

The GRAND LANGE 1 "Luna Mundi" is A. Lange & Söhne's first two-watch set. The two watch models correctly display the moon phases for the northern hemisphere (white gold) and for the southern hemisphere (pink gold).



LANGE 1 TIME ZONE (2005)

With its innovative home and zone time indication as well as the circumferential city ring, the Lange 1 TIME ZONE is the perfect companion for frequent flyers and cosmopolites. In its development, the focus was on superb legibility. The clearly organised dial delivers a single-glance reading of home time and the time in a second time zone.



LANGE 1 DAYMATIC (2010)

The first self-winding LANGE 1 opened a further chapter in the success story of A. Lange & Söhne's most famous watch family. The LANGE 1 DAYMATIC subtly distinguishes itself from the manually wound model with its mirror-image dial configuration. A retrograde day-of-week display takes the place of the power-reserve indicator which is less relevant for an automatic movement.



LANGE 1 TOURBILLON "165 Years – Homage to F. A. Lange" (2010 – limited to 150 watches)

In 2010, the LANGE 1 TOURBILLON "165 Years – Homage to F. A. Lange" proves that watchmaking can always transcend boundaries. Endowed with Lange's patented stop-seconds mechanism, this watch was presented in a case made of honey-coloured gold, an innovative gold alloy of unprecedented hardness.



LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR (2012)

The LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR unites two classic complications in the expressive LANGE 1 style. Thanks to the intelligent arrangement of the simultaneously advancing calendar displays outside the hour and minute circles, this watch redefines convenience in legibility. The technical perfection of the tourbillon with the patented stop-seconds mechanism can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback.



GRAND LANGE 1 (2012)

Elegant proportions characterise the personality of the GRAND LANGE 1. To faithfully transpose the harmonious dial layout of the LANGE 1 to the larger model, Lange's product developers created a totally new manually wound movement. They succeeded in arranging the time, outsize date and power-reserve displays without overlaps and simultaneously reduced the thickness of the movement.



GRAND LANGE 1 "Lumen"
(2012 – limited to 200 watches)

The GRAND LANGE 1 "Lumen" in platinum is enlightening: a semi-transparent dial reveals the mechanism of the first luminous outsize date display. The technical challenge was to preserve the luminosity of the date display after the switching process.The solution: a transparent units ring with black numerals that rotates above a rectangle coated with a luminous compound.



LANGE 1 TIME ZONE "Como Edition"
(2012-2014 – three watches to date)

A. Lange & Söhne has been committed to the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este since 2012. The eminent competition for classic automobiles and concept cars takes place on Lake Como in May every year. The winner in the "Best of Show" category is honoured with a customised LANGE 1 TIME ZONE model. The caseback of the "Como Edition" is hand-engraved with the coat of arms of the competition host. On the rotatable city ring, Como stands for Central European Time.



LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR HANDWERKSKUNST (2013 – limited to 15 watches)

One year after the market launch, the horological magnum opus with the two eponymous complications was presented in a strictly limited Handwerkskunst edition. The tremblage and relief engravings of the solid-gold dial and of various movement parts are among the highlights of this platinum watch. The blue numerals of the Lange outsize date are painted by hand.



GRAND LANGE 1 MOON PHASE (2014)

The GRAND LANGE 1 MOON PHASE puts the spotlight on the earth's companion. Calculated to an accuracy of 122.6 years, the moon-phase display of this latest member of the LANGE 1 family occupies a prominent place on the main dial. Thanks to a patented coating process, the lunar disc turns this astronomical complication into a scintillating experience.
